Two medals for Portugal on the first day of the Madrid Judo Open

This Saturday, Portugal won two medals at the Madrid Open in judo, with silver for Raquel Brito with -48 kg and bronze for João Crisóstomo with -73 kg, in addition to two fifth places.

Brito, 21, beat the Spanish Carla Peirot and the French Manon Urdiales, both by ‘ippon’, to win the ‘poule’ in which the competition began, also beating another Spaniard, María Gómez Antona, in the semifinals.

In the final, Frenchman Marine Gilly won and relegated the Portuguese to silver, one of the two podiums achieved today in Madrid, after João Crisóstomo got bronze with -73 kg.

The fight for the last place on the podium was also 100% Portuguese, with Crisóstomo beating his compatriot Thelmo Gomes, relegated to fifth place.

En route to bronze, the 28-year-old judoka beat Nantenaina Rakotonarivo of Malaga and Alessandro Magnani of Italy, losing in the quarterfinals to Hans-Jorris Ahibo of France.

Before removing Thelmo Gomes, who was fifth, he still left another Portuguese, Otari Kvantidze, on the road, relegating him to seventh place.

With a total of 20 Portuguese competing on the first day in the Spanish capital, note for another fifth place, for Emerson Silva, who lost the fight for bronze at -60 kg, in which Francisco Mendes was seventh.

On Sunday, 14 Portuguese judokas will be in action, especially João Fernando, who is one of those registered at -81 kg.
