Francisco J. Marques sentenced to one year and ten months in prison with a suspended sentence

The communication director of FC Porto, Francisco J. Marques, was sentenced this Monday afternoon to one year and ten months in prison with a suspended sentence in the case of disclosure of emails from Benfica in the Porto Canal. Judge Nuno Costa, of the Lisbon Court, considered that he “did what is called manipulation of information.”

Diogo Faria was also sentenced to nine months in prison with a suspended sentence. Both Francisco J. Marques and Diogo Faria were also sentenced to jointly pay compensation of ten thousand euros to Luís Filipe Vieira, former president of Benfica.

The journalist Júlio Magalhães, on the other hand, was acquitted of all crimes because the court understood that the then director of the channel “did not have the capacity to prevent the dissemination of emails.”

The case of disclosure of emails dates back to 2017 and 2018, with communications between elements linked to the Benfica structure and third parties to be revealed in the Universo Porto – da Benfica program, in Porto Canal, and began to be tried around six Months ago, on September 16, 2022.
