“We are going to invest like crazy”: at VivaTech, Emmanuel Macron defends France’s place in AI

Asked about artificial intelligence during his visit to the VivaTech fair, Emmanuel Macron defended the potential of France and called on regulators to “collaborate closely with the main players” in the sector.

Artificial intelligence is at the heart of the VivaTech fair, which is why Emmanuel Macron could not escape it during his walk through the halls of the fair on June 14. Questioned by a CNBC journalist, the President of the Republic recognized for the first time a gap with the United States in the race for artificial intelligence. “You have to be lucid.”

But the French are “the first in continental Europe”, according to Emmanuel Macron, who stressed the importance of “very good data scientists”. “We have a lot of talent suitable for this environment.”

Emmanuel Macron mentioned in particular the main language models (such as ChatGPT) as “one of the priorities that we want to develop”.

“We need rules”

But AIs are also the subject of much debate and many calls for more regulation, particularly at the level of the European Parliament, which adopted a first draft regulation on the same day. “We need global regulation,” argued Emmanuel Macron, who in particular calls for AI “to be safe and impartial.”

The president also called on regulators to “work closely with the big players” in the industry, including OpenAI, whose leader recently went on a major world tour to discuss upcoming regulations. Finally, Emmanuel Macron called for AI-generated images or text to be reported as such: “When we are exposed to an AI-generated text or photo, we have to know it.”
