Would working daily with an artificial intelligence make you feel lonely, alcoholic and sleepless? Even if this description borders on caricature, a study published by the University of Georgia claims that AI has effects on mental health. the specialized media report FastCompany. The results must be taken, however, with a grain of salt,
The survey was conducted between spring 2021 and spring 2022. Over a year, researcher Pok Man Tang and his teams interviewed 800 AI employees in the United States, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
The study was conducted at a Taiwan biomedical company, an American technology company, a Malaysian company, and finally, an Indonesian property management company.
Based on the results, it appears that employees who work with AI suffer more from loneliness, insomnia, and consume more alcohol than their non-AI colleagues. Please note that results differ by country. In Indonesia, the consumption of alcohol as a consequence of the use of AI is much lower than the rest of the countries studied.
In particular, the lack of human contact. It seems that employees working with an AI are more inclined to act in a group, to argue with their colleagues because they seek more interactions. As soon as they leave their workplace, the feeling of loneliness is felt more and excessive behavior is more likely to appear.
However, the results of this study remain to be qualified. The document thus recalls that the human being continues to be a social animal and that isolation reinforces the appearance of excessive behaviour.
For her part, the researcher Gem Dale, interviewed by fast companycautions against drawing conclusions from a single study:
According to an estimate by Goldman Sachs, generative AI could threaten 300 million jobs in the next few years.
