The number of successful cyberattacks against public and private organizations in France reached 385,000 in 2022 for a total cost of 2 billion euros, according to a statistical evaluation by the firm Asterès published on Tuesday, June 20.
This total is divided into 887 million euros in direct costs (loss of productivity, increased production costs), 888 million euros in redemptions and 7 million euros in lost working hours.
385,000 successful cyberattacks
For these figures, Asterès has prepared a series of studies on the number and average cost of cyberattacks, complemented by a survey of members of the Club of IT Infrastructure, Technology and Production Managers (CRiP).
About 43% of organizations have been the victim of at least one successful cyberattack in a year, according to a Forrester study for the insurer Hiscox. And an average of 4.3 cyberattacks are successful per year, according to an OpinionWay study of 328 French organizations.
Asterès derives the figure of 385,000 successful cyberattacks against French organizations in 2022.
In 2022, Anssi, the state IT security agency, drew attention to 831 attacks, or just 0.2% of the estimated total, Asterès notes.
Statistics to weigh
Of the 347,000 successful cyber attacks that affect companies, 330,000 affect SMEs and 17,000 medium and large companies. In addition, 37,000 successful cyberattacks targeted public organizations, or 10% of the total, Asterès calculates.
The average direct cost of a successful cyberattack in France is estimated at €25,600 without ransom and €64,000 for a large company. Added to this is the cost of the ransom, on average 25,700 euros per successful attack.
But this statistical average hides considerable disparities, stresses Asterès, who recalls that the average amount of a ransom for a private company amounts to 250,000 euros according to the firm CoveWare. Asterès weighted this figure by the probability that a company would pay a ransom.
