Streamberry: when Black Mirror deploys one of its episodes in reality

The creators of the series offer Internet users the same experience as the character in the first chapter of the last season.

Article guaranteed without spoiler. Season 6 of the Black Mirror series premiered on Netflix on June 16. In the first episode, the heroine sees her life fully broadcast in a series on a platform called Streamberry. In a well thought out communication move, Black Mirror allows Internet users to experience the same thing. Except for some details.

On their official Twitter account, Black Mirror shared a mystery link on June 20 with the caption, “Join Streamberry today!” A reference that speaks to those who have seen the first episode of the last season.

The fictional Streamberry platform takes up all the Netflix codes: from the colors to the bands, including the famous “tudum”. Black Mirror has chosen to openly mock Netflix.

Clicking on the proposed link in the tweet leads the user to a page inviting them to join the “Streamberry family”. To do this, you must share or upload a photo of yourself in order to register.

To get started, you need to enter your name and then upload a photo of yourself. After the photo is integrated, you are asked to check two boxes. One that indicates that the user consents to Netflix using their image for their marketing campaign. The other to affirm that the user has read and accepted the conditions and the privacy statement.

Learn to read the terms of use

Taking a closer look at the site’s fictitious terms of use, it is stated in particular on the third page that:

“By interacting with this Experience, you grant the Netflix entity (…) the affiliates and their respective successors and assigns, and any authorized person, the irrevocable, perpetual and non-exclusive right throughout the world to record, perform and /or make your likeness and use, and grant others the right, but not the obligation, to record, represent and/or make your likeness and use your real or simulated likeness, name, photograph, voice, actions, etc. in connection in the development, production, distribution, operation, advertising, promotion and use of these products (…) without compensation to you or any other person, except where prohibited by law.”

A nod to this first episode and all these terms of use that the client never reads. Once the conditions are accepted, a Streamberry landing page is generated with your name, as in the series. Then it appears: [nom] it is awful

Although everything is fictional on this site, the experience is still haunting. On Twitter, the reactions did not wait. Netizens have also used photos of political figures or movie characters.

Black Mirror, considered a series of anticipation, has many times been successful in the expansion of technologies. The first season premiered in 2011.
