Located in the middle of the Pacific, the Tuvalu Islands of Tuvalu, and their 12,000 inhabitants, could be submerged by the end of the century due to global warming.
At the State of the Pacific Conference on Thursday, Dr. Eselealofa Apinelu, former Attorney General of Tuvalu and current High Commissioner of Fiji, said “people should always be able to remember Tuvalu as it is, before it disappears” and could be a virtual version of the small Pacific nation, reports the guardian.
Therefore, the culture and values of Tuvalu could be kept in a “digital twin”, housed somewhere in the metaverse. No further technical details at the moment.
Symbolize climate alert
During COP 26 in 2021, the authorities were already alerting the world to the threat of the island’s disappearance, with images that have been widely shared. Simon Kofe, the Foreign Minister was giving a speech, knee deep in water.
“[Mais] we cannot digitize people”, warns the high commissioner, recalling the urgency of saving its inhabitants above all else. Digital technology will allow monitoring, but the island’s priority is to find solutions for its citizens. To do this, the authorities are turning to Australia and New Zealand.
