A clock connected to your mailbox. A gift that, at first sight, can please. Except that the US soldiers who would wear it would give away sensitive information without even knowing who the sender of this famous watch is, the US military warns.
This warning refers to the Smartwatch D18 connected watch, normally used for sports. Once turned on, the watch connects to the nearest Wi-Fi, phones, and mainly accesses data such as calories, number of steps, sleep tracking, alarm clock, or SMS reminder.
But the US military warns of possible watch-embedded malware sent to the military. This software would allow the sender to access stored data, including banking information, contacts, and third-party account information. Hackers also gain access to the connected phone’s microphone and camera.
“Don’t turn it on”
The US military warned its ranks in its press release: if they receive this watch, they are told “especially not to turn it on” and to “report any incidents to the counterintelligence service or the head of security.”
In 2018, the press revealed that the sports application Strava, which geolocates the routes of its users, had made it possible to accurately locate US military bases in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria based on data from soldiers.
Positions of members of the French counterintelligence had also been identified following the same principle.
