“Not the slightest misspelling”: a teacher refuses to correct the copies created by ChatGPT

The teacher judged that the students had misused the chatbot. The “researched” sentences and the absence of misspellings put the teacher on the ear.

A professor at IUT Charlemagne in Nancy has decided not to mark the papers of her 120 first-year BUT (University Bachelor of Technology) students due to excessive student use of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence software.

“This is a class of around 120 first-year students, enrolled in the BUT technical marketing diploma, who had to present a written document on thermalism, as part of the Nancy Thermal project,” Samuel Cruz-Lara, the director of the IUT Charlemagne, confirming information from the local press.

“Sought Phrases”

“When grading the marketing assignments, the proofreading teachers realized that the students had overused ChatGPT: their copies did not include the slightest misspelling, or were made up of search phrases,” continued the Mr. Cruz-Lara. “Had we had more time, we could have asked the students to explain themselves, which we did with some who half-acknowledged. Except we’re at the end of the college year. and in terms of the schedule, it’s difficult for us to react.”

The teacher responsible for the subject decided together with her other proofreading classmates involved in the module, not to correct the challenged written test. The director of the IUT, however, wants to be reassuring: “Students will continue to have a grade in this subject, they will not be penalized.”

No planned ChatGPT block

For the future, the director of the IUT has decided “not to cut off access to this type of IUT tools”, but to “engage with the students in a discussion about the benefit-danger and accompany them in the use of ChatGPT”. .

A modification of the internal regulations of the IUT is also foreseen: “We already had a paragraph on plagiarism, I will ask to add one on tools such as artificial intelligence, the use of which will be sanctioned in the same way as plagiarism.” For its part, the University of Lorraine, of which the IUT Charlemagne is a part, “has not yet made a general decision” on the use of artificial intelligence.
