Marseille: how a Netflix installation became a symbol of the city (even for Macron)

On a trip to Marseille, Emmanuel Macron posted on his Twitter account the giant letters with the image of the city, originally installed for a Netflix series.

13.70 meters high and 120 meters long – this is the size of all the letters in the name of the city of Marseille. For his visit to Marseille on June 26, Emmanuel Macron wanted to see “Marseille en Grand”. And to illustrate his point, he accompanied his tweet with a photo of these giant white letters. An installation that originally arose from an advertising campaign for the Netflix series of the same name, before settling in the long term.

“Changing the lives of the people of Marseille: two years after making this commitment, I am here to take stock of the various projects with you. I will take all the time necessary. Marseille in Grand!” Emmanuel Macron tweeted on 26 September June.

Willingly or not by Emmanuel Macron, these large white letters have been installed in the city since 2016. Following the Hollywood model, Netflix has also wanted to see things in a big way. On the occasion of the premiere of the series “Marseille”, with Gérard Depardieu and Benoît Magimel, in May 2016, Netflix installed these huge letters in tribute to the city.

The facility is located in the north of the city, in order to be visible to everyone from afar. The series crew had also posed in front of the giant panel (then under construction) as a promotional photo. Subsequently, the series did not have the expected success, being particularly criticized by the press and Internet users. But what was supposed to be short-lived finally became permanent.

The city of Marseille wanted to maintain this “Hollywood effect”, renovating the facility in 2019. A beautiful showcase for the city, which has become almost a symbol: last May, the rapper Alonzo and his teams covered the letters with a banner for the promotion of his latest album “Quartiers Nord”.
