Riot videos: Snapchat claims to “monitor the situation”

INFO Tech&Co – The platform, like TikTok, was questioned by Emmanuel Macron about its role in the riots that followed Nahel’s death.

“A considerable role in the movements of the last days.” This is how Emmanuel Macron described the impact of Snapchat and TikTok in the riots after the death of Nahel, shot dead by a police officer on June 27. The Head of State refers to the proliferation of content on the two platforms, some of which highlight the violence committed in multiple French cities.

Review “proactively”

“Violence has devastating consequences and we have zero tolerance for content that encourages or incites hate or violent behavior on our app. When we find this type of content, either through proactive detection or when reported to us, we remove it and take appropriate action. However, we do allow content that objectively reports a situation. Starting Tuesday, we are proactively reviewing the Snap Map and specifically riot-related content and removing content that violates our guidelines. We continue to monitor the situation”, Snapchat assures Tech & Co, this June 30.

The company references its mapping tool, which shows stories based on their geolocation. The Snap Map is particularly used for 48 hours. In particular, it shows “hot spots”, symbolized by more or less red dots depending on the amount of content posted.

This June 30, Emmanuel Macron asked in particular Snapchat and TikTok to remove “sensitive content”, adding that “the spirit of responsibility” is expected of the two social networks. Questioned by Tech&Co, TikTok assures for its part that its teams “are extremely attentive and that the Community Rules apply to all accounts and content without exception.”
