While the Senate committee of inquiry released its report on the Chinese app TikTok on Thursday, July 6, the latter reacted to the findings, saying it “deeply disagrees” with them.
“We disagree with the conclusions of this report, which does not accurately reflect the facts. We have spent many months and more than six hours under oath answering hundreds of questions and have been otherwise cooperative throughout this process. It is Disappointing that the Commission has spent so much time and resources re-examining the same misperceptions over and over again,” a TikTok spokesperson said on Thursday (July 6).

The Senate report, compiled after four months of investigation, points to many gray areas in the operation of the app and its business. The links with the Chinese government, the processing of personal data, the viability of the economic model and the danger to minors are issues that have been highlighted throughout the hearings carried out by the commission.
During the press conference linked to the publication of the report, the various members of the commission reiterated their regret at not having been able to speak with more company leaders, particularly Chinese executives. They also insisted that many questions remained unanswered, despite their numerous reminders.
The Senate has issued a list of recommendations on the application, with the aim of limiting the impact on minors, protecting the personal data of users or even asking the social network for transparency. The report recommends suspension of the app if TikTok is unable to access these requests.
