A moment out of time. French photographer Alexis Rosenfeld witnessed the first moments of a newborn calf last weekend in waters off South Africa. In an interview granted to West of Francerecounts this experience.
“We saw a baby that had just been born, it still had a piece of the cord. It had been born, I think, the day before or the same day,” he describes.
Be the “least intrusive”
Alexis Rosenfeld notes “a maternal and somewhat cheerful behavior” in the attitude of the mother of the calf. “She turned on her back, opened her big flippers and spun around, all with her baby in front of her,” the photographer explains.
“This is where we realize the fragility of these mammals, which are the largest on the planet,” he continues.
Alexis Rosenfeld’s team stayed away from the cetaceans, preferring to take photos and videos using a drone. “We need images and stories to tell, but we are also there to be as intrusive as possible,” explains the photographer.
