The US consumer protection agency, the FTC, is investigating the activity of OpenAI, creator of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) interface, in particular data security, but also certain content generated by the robot conversational.
The FTC, which also acts as a competition authority, sent OpenAI a long list of items it wants from the San Francisco startup, according to the document published by the FTC. Washington Posta classic procedure prior to a possible persecution or a possible friendly agreement.
OpenAI has acknowledged that a technical failure had caused, at the end of March, the disclosure of information relating to certain users of its services, mainly their email address and part of their bank details.
Separately, the FTC requests address user complaints that OpenAI language models, including ChatGPT, have generated “false, misleading, derogatory, or harmful” responses about people.

Therefore, the FTC also questions OpenAI about the measures taken to prevent the generation of erroneous content and false information by the so-called generative AI interface, that is, capable of producing complete responses to any type of request in a language fluent.
The consumer protection agency has already indicated that it is closely following the development of generative AI, which has fascinated and concerned since the launch of ChatGPT last November.
The head of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said Thursday that he regrets that the opening of this investigation has been disclosed in the press, which “does not generate confidence.”
