Presenting the driver’s license from the smartphone will soon be a reality. After the announcement of the first tests in this regard in spring, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, confirmed on July 17 that the dematerialized driving license will be available in 2024.

It can be used in the same circumstances as a physical driving licence, in particular during a roadside check. As Gérald Darmanin reminds us, the physical driving license will obviously continue to be available.
To use this digital license, motorists must use the France Identity application, still in the experimental phase, which allows them to import a digital version of their identity document on their mobile. Only obligation: have a biometric identity card, available for two years in France.
At the beginning of 2023, the European Commission also announced a dematerialized driving license project, with the aim of offering a tool that can be used in all EU countries.
The identity document and driving license are not the only official documents that will soon be offered in digital version. The Vitale card is also affected. From 2026 it can be integrated into your smartphone, this time from a specific application.
