“Finding a digital public order”. This is the will of Emmanuel Macron, a few weeks after the riots that followed the death of Nahel. During a speech on July 24 from Nouméa, the President of the Republic spoke again about the role that social networks can play in his opinion, underlining the young age of the rioters. “Many of these young people organized these riots, sometimes they participated in contests, through certain networks,” Emmanuel Macron said in particular.
Protect young people from screens
Emmanuel Macron’s previous stances against social media have at times been more threatening. In early July, the Head of State thus evoked the possibility of “cutting” social networks, in the event of a major crisis. A statement that was quickly followed by strong criticism from all political sides.
“We must manage to better protect our children and young adolescents from screens”, Emmanuel Macron also added on July 24, referring to the future obligation of smartphone manufacturers to integrate a parental control device from July 2024.
