After more than a year of testing, the paid content system implemented by Instagram takes shape and expands. French influencers, but also British, Australian or Canadian influencers can now claim compensation directly through the platform. Instagram detailed the list of affected countries in a blog post on Monday, July 24.
Several criteria must be met to be eligible: being of legal age and having more than 10,000 subscribers. Interested users can then offer their subscribers to pay a monthly subscription for exclusive content such as specific posts, live videos or stories that will be reserved for them. They will also have the possibility to create Channels (private discussion channels) dedicated to these subscribers.
Paid subscribers are distinguished by a purple badge that appears, for example, when they post comments or send private messages, giving them higher visibility compared to “simple” subscribers.
a regular income
Prices range from 0.99 cents to 9.99 euros per month, depending on the user’s free choice. The money will then be returned to the user in question. Gift idea for Instagram fans: it is even possible to offer a subscription to the user of their choice.
Launching the testing phase, which took place only in the United States last year, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said influencers “need regular income” and are not “reliant on audiences that inevitably vary from post to post.”
The platform has not communicated the number of users who use this subscription system. However, by way of example, it offers to consult some existing accounts to “see the subscriptions with your own eyes”, such as that of the American actor Ian Somerhalder, to which it is possible to subscribe for 3.19 euros per month.
