iPhone: the European Parliament adopts a text to force Apple to change its charger

All smartphones will now have to adopt the same charger. In fact, it only targets the iPhone.

Following an initial agreement in early summer, MEPs adopted text imposing a universal charger on 4 October. The goal is to force all manufacturers of smartphones, tablets and headphones to use a single charger, in USB-C format. The text will enter into force in just over a year.

“By the end of 2024, a large number of small and medium-sized portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras and headphones, will need to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. This legislation is part of the broader framework intended to make EU products more sustainable, reduce e-waste and make life easier for consumers.

A limited effect?

On paper, the main target player, and the only smartphone manufacturer, is Apple, which, in its iPhones, continues to integrate a “home” connection, called Lightning. But in practice, this text, which has been around for almost a decade, is probably too late to change things.

For several months now, rumors have mentioned Apple’s desire to update the connectors on its iPhones, to switch to USB-C, which is more efficient in terms of charging speed. And this, from 2023, that is, one year before the implementation of the obligation provided for by the European elected officials. However, the brand could be forced to update its AirPods, whose case also recharges in Lightning.

Please note that the adopted text contains some size limits: the loader format is not the only factor to ensure full compatibility between various mobiles. Specifically, manufacturers use the box connected to the USB-C cable to integrate their own fast charging technology, only compatible with their smartphones. Universal chargers, therefore, but whose effectiveness may vary depending on the model.
