TikTok often makes headlines for its crazy or dangerous challenges, but the social network can also spark real cultural passions. For several years, the “BookTok” community has been involved every day in recommending, rating or promoting books, comics or even manga.
The hashtag #BookTok thus represents more than 165 billion visits on the platform, with local communities around the world, including France. And to celebrate this love of books (Book Lovers’ Day was August 9), TikTok decided to put together a challenge throughout the month of August, in order to “find new ways for the community to create , learn and exchange”. with the rewards as key.

Several alternative challenges are also offered to users of the social network, such as making a video about a book “below the line”, about their favorite works or even about an independent bookstore that deserves to be better known. This type of challenge is already common on the social network, with videos every day on different topics.
On its explanation page, TikTok seems to indicate that its challenge rewards will only be awarded to creators residing in the United States, although nothing prevents Internet users from other countries from participating.
This playful challenge completes the series of measures adopted by TikTok to increase its weight in the literary industry. Fueled by the success of BookTok, ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) decided to launch its own publishing house. At the end of April, the company registered the brand “8th Note Press”, a company qualified as dedicated to the sale and publication of books.
A way to support certain authors, whose success can be sudden thanks to the social network. Today, for example, many novels highlight on their cover the fact that they were “BookTok sensations.”
