Bug spins 3D printers in the middle of the night

Some Bambu 3D printer owners have found that their device turned on by itself in the middle of the night and caused major hardware damage to their device.

A funny situation to say the least. Several owners of Bambu Lab brand 3D printers noticed, upon awakening, major failures that occurred during the night of Tuesday, August 15 in their device. Some users were shocked to discover that their device had started working, without intervention on their part, in the middle of the night causing significant material damage to their printer.

Spotted by The Verge, several of them talked about X and Reddit. They claim to have discovered failed prints upon getting out of bed, while others have mentioned the presence of unsolicited copies of objects from previous print requests. Faults concerning the Bambu X1C and Bambu P1P models.

real fire risk

Taking advantage of the problem, Bambu Lab, whose devices, however, enjoy an excellent reputation, made an official statement about it in a blog post published on Wednesday, August 16. The Chinese company says it has launched an investigation to determine the origin of these incidents. For now, assume these could have been caused by two failures of your cloud servers.

These two drawbacks could have prevented communication between the servers and the printers, since the former no longer knew whether user requests had actually been printed. Instead of canceling these requests, the servers would have ended up processing the print requests continuously until they were successful, Bambu said. In short, “print processing sent to the printer got stuck in the cloud and was delayed,” writes the 3D printer specialist company.

The situation might make you smile because the damage is only limited to those mentioned above. But these incidents could have had a more tragic outcome: 3D printers are among the few devices that, under heavy load, can get hot enough to start a fire. However, even if Bambu printers are equipped with a device that supposedly prevents the device from overheating, Maker’s Muse, a YouTube channel dedicated to 3D printing, revealed last January that this system was ineffective and should be improved.

“We take full responsibility”

For its part, Bambu, unlike other companies faced with this type of problem, made its mea culpa and assured that it would assume “full responsibility for these breakdowns.”

“We would like to sincerely apologize for this incident. We understand the frustration and inconvenience it may have caused, and we take full responsibility. It is difficult to have a 100% reliable cloud service permanently, but we should have at least designed the system with more care to avoid such embarrassing consequences.

“Our ‘R&D’ and Cloud Networking teams are working tirelessly to identify the root cause and ensure this never happens again. We plan to implement changes such as additional pre-launch checks of a print to prevent further issues.” ensures Bamboo.

Contacted by The Verge, Bambu stopped short of promising free repairs and replacements for all affected customers. However, the company says that anyone who has suffered damage should contact their help desk as soon as possible.
