Unesco warns about the use of Artificial Intelligence in schools and universities

UNESCO today called on governments to rapidly regulate the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools to ensure ethics and focus education and research on human beings.

This Thursday, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) published global guidelines on the use of AI, proposing to set the minimum age for students to use the tool in a school context at 13 years. .

The UN body also stressed that teachers must have adequate training, as well as global, national and regional standards for data protection and privacy must be established.

UNESCO has warned that the use of AI is exacerbating the digital data divide and that current ChatGPT models use user data that reflects the dominant values and social norms of the global North.

In June, UNESCO warned that the use of generative AI in schools is being rolled out too quickly due to a “worrying lack of scrutiny, control and regulation.”

Generative AI can create text, images, videos, music, and computer programming codes, which will eventually have profound implications for education and research processes.

A recent survey carried out by UNESCO among more than 450 schools and universities indicated that only ten percent have implemented regulations on the use of this technological tool, mainly due to the lack of national regulations.

“Generative AI can be a great opportunity for human development, but it can also cause harm and prejudice,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

Thus, he stated, “the (AI) tool cannot be integrated into education without public commitment and without the necessary safeguards and regulations by governments.”
