Why the launch of “channels” is an important advance for WhatsApp

Meta announced the launch in 150 countries of “channels”, a new function that allows you to follow the news of organizations and personalities. A big change for the courier service.

DJ Snake, McFly and Carlito or even the singer Drake. Instagram already allows you to follow the news of athletes, artists or even well-known brands. This is now also the case with WhatsApp. It was through the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, that the messaging platform announced, on Wednesday, September 12, the deployment in 150 countries of a new feature: WhatsApp Channels.

The latter, previously tested in 10 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America since last June, allows, like Instagram, to subscribe to personalities, brands or even organizations. The service aims to offer platform users the possibility of “staying informed about the topics that interest them,” Meta explains in her press release.

An evolution for the messaging service

If famous content creators, such as Enjoyphoenix, Inoxtag or even Joyca, have already responded to the call of WhatsApp by creating their own channel, the functionality is not reserved only for well-known brands and personalities. In the coming months, each WhatsApp user will be able to create their own channel. Furthermore, the launch of this feature constitutes an important change for WhatsApp. The platform, which until now was only limited to private communications, is evolving its model.

A default choice: compared to competitors such as Télégram, which already deploys this type of functionality, the Meta application cannot remain frozen. This new service should help revive interest in messaging. Additionally, Meta is reportedly considering allowing monetization of the channel. An important challenge given that WhatsApp, unlike Facebook and Instagram, uses this possibility very little.

The rollout of the feature is underway globally and will be completed in the coming weeks. If the dedicated tab does not yet appear in the app, you can sign up for a waiting list to receive a notification as soon as it is available.
