Google Maps accused of causing the death of a motorist by directing him towards a collapsed bridge

Did Philip Paxson die because of Google? For his family there is no doubt about it. She is suing the tech giant following the death of the father of two. According to relatives of the victim, who died in September 2022, Google Maps was the cause of his fatal car accident, details the BBC.

At the center of the case, a bridge that collapsed for nine years in Hickory, North Carolina (United States). The driver would have taken it following the route indicated by the Google maps application.

“You followed Google’s outdated instructions.”

When the incident occurred, Philip Paxson was returning from one of his daughters’ birthday party. Arranged at a friend’s house, the father stayed to clean the place while his wife took his children home earlier.

Except their trip took place in the dark and in the rain. Conditions that made visibility difficult. “You unknowingly followed Google’s outdated instructions,” the complaint states. If the bridge had collapsed for nine years, the protective barriers blocking the road were mysteriously absent that day, he says. The Charlotte Observer.

Philip Paxson’s vehicle then fell into Snow Creek, causing the driver to drown.

In their complaint, the family also targets three local companies, stating that they had an obligation to maintain the bridge. For its part, Google is examining the matter and assures that its “goal is to provide accurate information about routes in Maps.”
