The French online sales site Leboncoin has indicated that the sale of wild animals, exotic animals and a certain number of NACs (New Pets) will now be prohibited. The platform indicated this in a press release, through its general director Amandine de Souza, on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
Among the animals affected are, for example, snakes, turtles, iguanas and even parrots, which are usually victims of trafficking. Some species are imported from foreign countries and purchased on the platform by individuals, sometimes for several thousand euros.
This is the case, for example, of Greek tortoises or even royal pythons, animals whose success has increased in recent years.
The ban also extends to products “derived” from these animals, such as ivories, skins, isolated limbs, etc. A way to fight against poaching and the danger of extinction of threatened species.
A vague list
To prevent the spread of these ads, the platform performs automatic upward tracking.
In theory, the NAC list also includes a certain number of rodents, such as hamsters or rabbits. According the news site Actu.frThe NGO IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) also points out a “too vague” border between the domestic and non-domestic animals in question, which does not really allow them to be distinguished.
For its part, the 30 Million Friends Foundation reacted by asking the platform to extend this sales ban to all animals, whether exotic or pets.
When asked about the exhaustive list of new pets affected, Leboncoin has not yet responded to our requests.
