iPhone 15 Overheating: Why You Shouldn’t Worry (Yet)

Many iPhone 15 and 15 Pro users have reported heating issues with their new device in recent days. If it’s not very nice, it’s not entirely new either.

You have a new iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro and sometimes you feel like you have a hot plate in your hands while charging, but not only that. This has also happened to us recently, whether charging, playing games, or testing the device for video recording or streaming for a long time.

While it’s not really pleasant, it’s also not a new phenomenon. Without a doubt, the powerful A17 Pro chip is no stranger to this increase in temperature when a lot of pressure is applied to the device. The A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 Pro also used to have some heat on the upper back and now powers the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

An iPhone that works again

But the phenomenon here also has a recurring explanation every year: the continuous personalization of your iPhone. Every time you use a new Apple smartphone, you’ll repatriate your iCloud profile and your previous backup to start where you left off with its predecessor, with your apps, your contacts, your data, etc.

And all of this, the iPhone polishes, reinstalls and adapts to your new device in the background, without depriving you of its use. He will also relearn your habits to copy them to the newcomer. The first most visible thing is autonomy. From experience, you should never rely on the first few days and first charges to judge the resistance of the new iPhone. DXOMARK experts have told us in the past: it takes three to four total charge and discharge cycles for the iPhone to reach its true cruising speed. Before that, you change your settings and the battery drops faster than expected.

The overheating is, therefore, due (in part) to these updates that are carried out in the first days, as confirmed by an internal source of the brand. In the next few days it should drop a few degrees. Apple, which boasted about the new aluminum internal architecture of its iPhone 15 Pro as an important element for better heat dispersion, could also solve the problem with a software update to reduce the power of its chip, unfortunately.

Pay attention to your cables and chargers!

The other point raised by users as a possible reason for overheating also concerned the charging cables. The iPhone 15 now relies on a USB Type-C port, with a new braided cable included. The same although the technologies are not exactly the same (USB 2 for iPhone 15/15 Plus, USB 3 for iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max).

But they tell us that this would not be one of the possible reasons for the observed warming. The iPhone 15 could be charged using any cable, even from another manufacturer. However, to achieve higher transfer speeds on the iPhone 15 Pro, you need a dedicated USB 3 cable.

Be careful, though, as Apple no longer provides a power adapter, you’ll need to find one that supports USB-C, if you’re not charging via the USB-C port on a Mac or PC. And as always, as with the cable, the best advice for your iPhone is to avoid the lowest prices found in stores or commercial sites. They do not always meet safety standards and can present much greater risks than simply heating a smartphone.
