It all starts with a fake ad on Google Maps. In New York, a group of friends, all of them belonging to technology companies, opened and then closed their own restaurant in one night, after announcing it on the Internet, reports the British newspaper The Guardian.
One of the members of the group of friends, who lives in a shared apartment in New York, had published, in 2021, an advertisement on Google Maps with comic intent to praise the culinary merits of one of them. Among friends, praise has multiplied about the cooking of their steaks, among other things, making them believe in an authentic New York grill institution.
The joke becomes real.
One thing led to another and the positive reviews led, in 2022, to two clients, strangers in the shared accommodation, knocking on their door and asking if a table was available. The roommates then decide to create a website for the restaurant, which will have more than 900 reservations.
Driven by this success, the team’s chef decides to rent a place in Manhattan and the group of friends opens their ephemeral restaurant for one night for their guests. Among the guests were journalists from New York Times either New York Postwho described “a subtle farce” that “will be remembered.”
On the internet, however, the initiative was somewhat criticized, accused of copying a similar story that took place in London in 2017. A group of friends had also posted a large number of positive comments about home cooking, which led to the ad to become the best rated on Google Maps. To extend the prank, the group of friends organized a party where they served their guests canned soups and prepared dishes.
