Eating disorder, abortion: YouTube relaxes its rules for educational content

In order not to harm creators in the monetization of their videos, YouTube is relaxing its rules on sensitive topics for content dedicated to education.

YouTube has announced that it is relaxing its moderation policy on certain sensitive content, to allow educational creators not to be harmed by demonetization.

For example, videos that talk about eating disorders will no longer necessarily be demonetized, unlike before. If the content is of a learning or testimonial nature, its creator will be eligible for monetization.

On the other hand, the rule obviously remains valid when these disorders are promoted through harmful practices or when products such as laxatives or weight loss products are promoted.

abortion, abuse

Among the sensitive content in question are also abortion, sexual abuse and even domestic violence, all topics that were previously almost systematically exempt from revenue when appearing on YouTube.

In this video, posted on Tuesday, September 26, Conor Kavanagh, head of monetization policy, spoke on behalf of YouTube and explained that the company recognizes that there are many topics that need to be discussed and that can be beneficial for many users. Thus, these videos, as long as they respect a certain number of criteria, will be able to generate income for their creator.

The increasingly recurrent demonetization of YouTube videos has caused the platform to attract numerous criticisms from users. In fact, some educational videos had not received revenue from advertisers, even though they addressed these topics in an educational way.
