The Champalimaud Foundation celebrates researchers on the night of the last supermoon of the year

The last Friday of September once again has a special evening: the European researchers’ night. In total, there are almost 50 scientific institutions in 25 European countries that are open to society. Among them is the Champalimaud Foundation (FC), of Lisbon, which sees the initiative as a “celebration of science and scientists.”

Catarina Ramos, who leads the FC Communication and Events team, states that the objective “is to bring closer to an audience that normally does not have access to this type of events, such as schools or those that are further away, or communities such as, for example, For example, the deaf community.” The person in charge guarantees that the Foundation made this effort to “bring closer to the public that normally does not have the facilities or that does not travel to this type of events.”

It is the second year in a row that the Foundation organizes a different night and, once again, with a broken telephone: the “Science on the walls: a broken telephone” initiative that links research and art.

“A researcher talks about his work, that is, he explains what science he dedicates himself to. Then the child or young participant will summarize what she managed to understand and transmit the message to an artist who will then make an interpretation of that project. “Let’s see how damaged the phone is,” Catarina Ramos explains with a laugh.

The broken phone is just one of the dozens of planned activities that also include sports, dancing and music, but not only that: “We are going to have a Fast dates with scientists around the topic of research in animal models, we will have an outdoor concert with a duo of artists from hip hop and r&b, who are David Cruz and João Pina. “Then we will also have round tables, we will have many practical activities that will be brought to us by scientists from various areas, from social sciences to health sciences.”

Visits to laboratories and live comedyin a diverse program to satisfy the interests of the public, even those who like to see the moon.

The head of the FC Communication and Events team remembers that the event “will coincide with the last supermoon of the year” and, also for this reason, highlights that “it is worth it” to participate in this initiative.

The invitation is made for a night that begins earlier: at 3 p.m. for schools and at the end of the afternoon for the general public. Admission is free and the complete program can be consulted on the Champalimaud Foundation website.

This European Night of Researchers also includes the National Museum of Natural History and Science and the Pavilion of Knowledge, both in Lisbon.
