From Utah, Americans marry Chinese gay couples on Zoom

The US state of Utah marries long-distance Chinese gay couples. This is possible thanks to a legal opening that dates back to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Utah (United States), which does not impose any residency requirement to celebrate a marriage, has united dozens of homosexual couples living in China, reports the site rest of the world. In fact, the American state has introduced online marriages during the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving the possibility for any couple of Internet users to join, from any country in the world.

Michael Foley, radio host and licensed Utah marriage officiant, testifies about the guardian. He was contacted several months ago to do a completely online wedding for a gay couple living in China. “He called the Provo County Clerk’s Office in Utah to find out. To his surprise, the office told him that the ceremony was legal as long as the couple were of legal age and their identities could be verified, ”describes the British newspaper.

Since then, the radio host regularly gets up at 3 am to perform online weddings for same-sex couples in China. He does it from his house in his kitchen, equipped with a green background.

As Chinese sexual minorities face repression at home, Utah County allows them to officially marry for about $100. A price that includes administrative expenses. Such marriages carry no legal weight in China, where same-sex unions are illegal. But this allows couples to solemnize their commitment in the eyes of the State, at least with a jurisdiction, even if it is not that of their country.
