A suitcase full of personal effects, for 1.95 euros. This is what a Facebook page promises, whose platform has been broadcasting advertising for several days. Several advertisements, discovered by an Internet user on Twitter, impersonate the Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport to defraud victims. Ads also appear in the platform’s advertising library, which lists all of its advertisers.
“Our airport does not have space to store lost luggage and the airport sells suitcases with miscellaneous items and electronics for only 1.95 euros,” the fraudulent publication promises. In total, since October 21, Facebook has published around twenty ads, all of them from the same page.
Facebook, used to scam ads
The ad invites the victim to click on a link that redirects them to a fake site created for the occasion. You are then invited to provide personal data (after conducting a fake draw) and then pay the sum of 1.95 euros online. For scammers, the goal is to recover your banking details and then steal money from you.
To make the scam even more tempting, the Facebook page behind the posts added numerous fake comments to their posts. Below their ads are photos of fake accounts, supposedly satisfied with their purchases.
The distribution of scam ads by Facebook or its subsidiary Instagram is common. Lately, the platform has promoted scams with fake fuel cards or fake accounts that allow you to try out the Disney+ streaming platform.
As Tech&Co revealed in early 2023, Facebook has also received millions of euros since 2019 to spread advertising from pages linked to questionable energy renovation services. Pages eventually removed for “fraud and deception” after our article was published.
