A completely new type of robot is being tested at one of Amazon’s robotics research and development centers in Seattle. Digit, its nickname, is Amazon’s first humanoid robot. Thanks to its certain mobility, this bipedal robot can perform a wide range of tasks.
“The digits can be used to move containers and packages,” says Emily Vetterick, director of research and development at Amazon Robotics, speaking to Tech&Co.
“Digit combines two capabilities”
The robot also combines the capabilities of these less versatile predecessors. “Digit combines two abilities: the ability to move, like our robot Hercules, and the ability to grab objects and manipulate them, like Robin or Sparrow,” continues Emily Vetterick.
Manufactured by the American company Agility Robotics, the human-like robot is still in the testing phase. Now is not the time for speculation for the director of research and development at Amazon Robotics, who certifies that the development program is “very rigorous.”
Amazon, which had about 750,000 robots in its ranks as of June 26, 2023, is expanding its range of robots with Digit. Sequoia, Hercules and Proteus are already an integral part of the American giant’s staff.
