Who hasn’t dreamed of receiving their package 30 minutes after ordering it? This is the promise of Prime Air, the drone delivery service operated by Amazon. “This service allows the user to place a traditional order… until delivery,” explains Jason Patrao, director of engineering for Prime Air, at Tech&Co in Seattle. “This is where the drone comes into action and delivers to the customer in less than half an hour.”
Announced as a getaway in 2013 by the head of the distribution giant, Jeff Bezos, the Prime Air program is developing.
Italy and the United Kingdom in 2024
And although the United States now has two drone delivery sites (in California and Texas), they are not the only market Prime Air is targeting.
The engineering director indicates that drones can “deliver 90% of the products” for sale on Amazon. “We can make the drone carry objects the size of a shoe box. The plane can also carry batteries and even pharmaceuticals. In the future it will be able to carry all kinds of items.”
New drones
The new drones, the Prime Air MK30, more imposing than current devices, will have a range of 24 kilometers. That’s twice as many as its predecessors.
Capable of delivering one product at a time for the moment, drones will be able to “deliver a multitude of packages at once” in the near future, the company estimates.
This new delivery method represents a security challenge, acknowledges Jason Patrao: “Our entire program revolves around security. We could not deliver a package with drones if we believe that the security criteria are not met. We work with the regulations that we impose.”
