Since Friday, the date of the new bombings carried out by the Israeli army, the Gaza Strip has been isolated from the world. And more and more Internet users are launching calls for help on Twitter asking Elon Musk to restore Internet in the region thanks to his Starlink satellite network.
In France, the hashtag “#starlinkforgaza” has become number two on the trends and already has more than 3.6 million mentions. Elon Musk has not posted an official reaction but he reacted to certain tweets directed at him. “It is not clear who has the authority for land connections in Gaza, but do we know that no terminal has requested a connection in this area?” he responded to a netizen who tweeted: “Gaza is under bombing, Internet and telecommunications have” They have been cut. “They need StarLink immediately.”
The request is simple: Starlink could restore mobile and internet networks in Gaza, even if the country’s infrastructure is destroyed. With its fleet of 4,000 satellites, Starlink recently promised that its satellite SMS service will work “everywhere you can see the sky,” even in the “most remote regions.”
Just a year ago, Elon Musk had already tried to deploy more than 25,000 Starlink kits to counter the first Russian attacks, which had neutralized the country’s main telecommunications tools. At the origin of this petition is the Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transition, Mykhailo Fedorov, who challenged the billionaire in a tweet in February 2022.
