“What audacity!”: why Reporters Without Borders attacks the general director of X (Twitter)

In a statement, RSF Director General Christophe Deloire protested against X and the disinformation that accompanies it.

“But what incredible nerve!” The “brave” approach spoken of by Christophe Deloire, secretary general of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), is that of Linda Yaccarino, executive director of X (Twitter). She who emphasized, in a tweet this Tuesday, the “vital work” of “certain organizations” in the search for verified information.

Among these organizations, mentioned in the publication: Netsafe New Zealand (which helps people who have been harmed online); IINAC (the international network against cyberhate) and Reporters without borders (an international non-governmental organization that advocates for press freedom and the protection of journalists’ sources).

The three were congratulated for their “tireless” work to protect global freedoms of expression, information and the press. But the mention of Reporters Without Borders in this tweet irritated Christophe Deloire.

The “deviations” mentioned by Christophe Deloire are the content considered “misleading” distributed on platform X through publications. War between Hamas and Israel, sensationalism, conspiracy theories, X is considered a “super spreader” of lies according to the European Commission.

“Disinformation”

The latter also opened an investigation last October for “misinformation” against the social network. A first warning letter from digital commissioner Thierry Breton was sent to Elon Musk, owner of X, before the investigation was opened.

The recommendations, submitted in March 2023, included among others: a reinstatement of royal certification; greater investment in the fight against disinformation; promotion of reliable information and action to renew contact with the media.

The general secretary of RSF deplores a social network that has become “the radical embodiment of the threat that large platforms pose to democracies”, since Elon Musk bought Twitter to transform it into an X.

Having become a political machine in 2023, The application is available for download in Europe from this Thursday at noon.
