App stores: EU demands explanations from Apple and Google on user security

The European Commission has asked both companies to clarify the measures implemented to guarantee the safety of their users.

On Thursday, December 14, Brussels asked Apple and Google for explanations about the measures they are implementing to guarantee the security of users of their online stores App Store and Google Play, under the new EU legislation.

This announcement is part of a series of investigations launched by the European Commission since October into major online platforms, including Meta, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and Amazon, in order to enforce a new Law on Digital Services (DSA). .

Since the end of August, this has imposed obligations on 19 large Internet operators. The Commission, which now plays the role of digital police in the EU, has the power to monitor and sanction violators.

Identify “the risks”

The European executive explained in a statement that it had asked Apple and Google “to provide more information” about the means used to identify “risks” in relation to their respective App Store and Google Play stores.

The Commission also requests, before January 15, information “on its compliance with the rules on transparency of online advertising and recommendation systems.”

The new European legislation imposes a series of limitations on online distributors.

Advertising, identity of sellers.

For example, they must verify the identity of sellers before authorizing them on their platform and block repeat scammers. In terms of advertising, they must allow each user to know the parameters used to target them and the ad sponsor.

The request for information sent on Thursday, December 14 to Apple and Google, under the DSA, does not constitute a challenge at this time.

However, this is a first step in a procedure that could ultimately lead to heavy financial penalties in case of proven and prolonged violations of the rules. In extreme cases, fines could reach 6% of the global turnover of the groups involved.
