OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has banned the Chinese company ByteDance from entering its lands. It is accused of having used generative artificial intelligence to train its own models, a practice contrary to its conditions of use.
The specialized media The Verge revealed, on December 15, that ByteDance, also Tiktok’s parent company, was secretly using the ChatGPT programming interface to build and train its own generative artificial intelligence models, which would later become the company’s competitors. American company. .
An “experimental service”
In a press release following The Verge’s allegations, ByteDance indicated that one of its teams earlier this year had used OpenAI’s programming and data interface “for an experimental service that was never intended to be used.” The company talks about the end of this service in April 2023, to comply with OpenAI’s conditions of use.
“Although ByteDance’s use of our API is minimal, we have suspended your account pending a thorough investigation. If we find that your use violates our terms of service, we will ask you to make the necessary changes or permanently delete your account.” OpenAI said in a statement sent to The Verge.
While their use seems “minimal,” according to an OpenAI spokesperson who spoke to The Verge, the company preferred to ban, at least temporarily, ByteDance. The ban also comes in a context in which ByteDance, and especially its social network Tiktok, are being scrutinized around the world for suspicions of espionage in the interests of China.
