Pornhub denies being a “very large platform” to avoid European regulation

The adult video site claims to have only 33 million monthly European users, not 45 million, as defined by the DSA.

The European Commission announced this Wednesday, December 20, the incorporation of three large platforms under the yoke of digital services regulation. These are three major pornography companies: Pornhub, Xvideos and Stripchat.

According to the European Commission, these platforms are now considered “very large” and must comply with the same rules as the other 19 that share their status, such as Facebook, Tiktok or even Amazon. But the announcement is not to the liking of the porn video site Pornhub.

Already in the crosshairs of many countries, the site claims to have only 33 million European users, and not the 45 million needed for “very large platform” status.

Previously, Amazon and Zalando had also questioned their status as a “very large platform”, arguing that certain DSA obligations would have an impact on their activity.

The Digital Services Regulation, which came into force at the end of August, aims to regulate platforms with at least 45 million monthly European users.

In the United States, Pornhub has withdrawn from several states due to restrictions that are too severe. In France, the government is still working on an effective and transparent method to implement an age verification system.

A long-standing project, which could also be affected by Pornhub’s new status before the DSA, if it is maintained.
