A first-generation iPhone sold for 40,000 euros at auction

The first generation model of the Apple smartphone was still sold in the original box. The auction started at $2,500.

Smartphones can be worth gold, but not necessarily only the latest generation. An online sale, organized by LCG Auctions, auctioned off a first-generation iPhone, initially released in 2007. Bidding went up quickly and the item was in excellent condition.

Packaging

Looking at the photos posted by the auction site, one could almost believe that the smartphone has just been traded and bought. Still decked out in its protective plastic, the iPhone 2G on sale for two weeks is, according to LCG Auctions, “in exceptional condition.”

For fifteen days, potential buyers followed one another to reach a final offer of 39,339 dollars, or almost 40,000 euros. However, the initial bet was “only” $2,500. Originally, the iPhone 2G with 8GB (!) of memory sold for $599.

No AppStore or front camera

It is difficult today to imagine life without all the applications that follow us on a daily basis. At that time, however, it was necessary to do without. The iPhone 2G did not have an App Store: users had to settle for a few applications already installed, such as Notes, Weather, Calendar or Safari. The App Store will only appear in July 2008, on the iPhone 3G.

And if today’s new iPhones offer extraordinary storage capacity with some up to 1TB of memory, the first iPhone was only available in three versions: 4GB, 8GB and 16GB. As for the photos, the first generation of the Apple smartphone did not have a front camera. The latter will not land until 2010 with the iPhone 4.

Other features missing from this first iPhone: the Siri voice assistant, which only launched in 2011; sending of MMS, introduced in 2009; or the customization of your wallpaper, available only from 2010.

This iPhone does show all the advances of the Apple brand in 15 years. Will the new owner of the phone, whose identity has been kept secret, hold it dearly or use it as nostalgically as users of vintage vinyl records, audio cassettes or video game consoles?
