Start a business, play sports… Spotify tests video courses

Streaming giant Spotify continues its diversification strategy and offers educational video content in the United Kingdom.

Five minutes to improve your sales techniques, ten more to adopt a balanced diet… In the UK, Spotify now offers video courses.

Designed in collaboration with the BBC or e-learning specialist Skillshare, the content is divided into 4 categories: “making music”, “being creative”, “learning business” and “healthy lifestyle”.

The first two episodes free.

The new offer is available freemium on mobile and computer from Spotify. The first two episodes are available for free to all users, free and premium. The rest of the video lessons are paid. The price has not been communicated.

While adding video courses to a streaming platform may be surprising, Mohit Jitani, chief product officer at Spotify, sees it as a logical choice.

According to the company’s press release, one in two Premium users has already listened to podcasts on education or personal development topics.

At the moment, the feature is only available in the United Kingdom. But the streaming platform announced that it was a “test.” Therefore, the concept should be implemented in other countries if the experience is a success.

Diversification strategy

For Spotify, the objective is twofold: to retain its users and attract content creators specialized in learning. To be present on the app, creators will have to pay a percentage of their earnings to Spotify.

Since 2019, the music streaming giant has tried by all means to diversify its offer to differentiate itself from the competition. Spotify has notably launched itself into the audiobook sector. More recently, the company added a catalog of video clips to its service, while the macOS app gained a mini-player, a small window that brings together the main controls that can be placed anywhere on the screen.

And the strategy seems to be working. The world leader in streaming has exceeded 600 million monthly users in 2023. An increase of 23% year-on-year according to its annual report.
