Hate against transgender people: report highlights Facebook’s moderation shortcomings

According to GLAAD, an LGBTQ+ rights association, posts calling for anti-transgender hate were widely shared on Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

Goal, once again called into question. GLAAD, an association that defends LGBTQ+ rights, considers that the group’s moderation policy is ineffective in combating anti-transgender content.

Widely distributed content

Still according to relationship, The platform would have authorized dozens of hate messages, including posts that incite violence against transgender people, offensive messages, or even messages that promote conversion therapy. So many posts that violate the Californian group’s moderation policy.

The organization says LGBTQ+ people “are experiencing a growing number of well-documented real-world harms due to the propaganda campaigns of anti-LGBTQ extremists that Meta allows to flourish on its platforms.”

This content was published on Facebook, Instagram and Threads, Twitter’s new competitor, between June 2023 and March 2024. The report cites, for example, Instagram posts describing transgender characters as “demonic” or “satanic.” Others accuse transgender people of being “sexual predators” and “perverts.”

Some of these messages were shared by widely followed accounts on social networks. Among them is Libs of TikTok, run by far-right influencer Chaya Raichik.

“A simply unacceptable failure”

All of these publications were reported by the association through the platforms’ “reporting systems.” Despite the report, the platform took no specific action. “Meta responded that this content does not violate its platforms’ moderation policy,” the report says.

This is not the first time that Meta has been accused of not fighting effectively against content that incites hatred. Last year, the Oversight Board created by the Californian group urged Meta to “improve the accuracy of its moderation system in relation to hate speech towards the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Last November, Emmanuel Macron also pointed out the indifference of major American platforms such as Facebook or Twitter towards online hate. “Trust is reduced,” declared the President of the Republic, in reference to the absence of the leaders of the main social networks, during the annual meeting of the Christchurch appeal.
