100 euros offered by Temu: why you should be wary of this very attractive offer

The low-cost e-commerce application offers its users the possibility of winning 100 euros in exchange for their personal data.

Share your personal data for 100 euros. This is what Temu offers, the Chinese application that allows you to purchase numerous products at reduced prices. It has launched a new offer to save its users money, reports the specialized site Numerama.

Significant collection of personal data.

Active in France, this offer is subject to certain conditions: it is necessary to install the application on your smartphone, invite other users by sharing the link within 24 hours and link a Paypal account to the Temu account to recover the profit.

Tested by Tech&Co, scanning the QR code opened the rewards program in the app, with an “initial incentive” of 90 euros, followed by several bonuses to increase the reward to 99 euros. “To get €100 you only need €1 more,” says the application, encouraging you to invite other users to obtain the missing euro and recover the 100 euros (40 euros via Paypal and 60 euros in coupon).

Temu, who has already expressed concern about spyware, does not specify, however, that it is also necessary to share a lot of personal data to recover this profit, as screenshots of the rules of the program shared on X (formerly Twitter) show. .

Participation in the program is equivalent to giving your consent to share “their photo, name, image, voice, opinions, statements, biographical information and/or hometown and state for personal or advertising purposes in any global media, now known or developed in the future”. , in perpetuity, without further review, notification, payment or consideration,” the program rules establish.

Furthermore, during the tests carried out at Tech&Co, the application at no time displayed these rules of use to warn the user of the abundance of personal data that must be shared with the Chinese application.

A dangerous offer

If several British users were attracted by Temu’s offer, others are rightly concerned about the significant collection of data and its exploitation by the platform. Some fear, for example, that the application will use this information to create deepfakes.

“Consumers need to understand what this entails. Providing personal data without understanding its purpose or possible repercussions exposes them to serious risks, whether it be becoming a victim of cybercrime or identity theft,” warned Adrianus Warmenhoven, security expert at NordVPN, in a statement. press release transmitted by Numerama.

Contacted by the British media The Tab, a spokesperson for Temu stated, however, that the site only collects information about users to provide its services and improve the customer experience.

“We do not sell user information. The highlighted terms and conditions are common in similar promotions run by various companies in different industries,” it added.
