“Fake content”: BeReal boss addresses Instagram

BeReal, which claims to be a social network where it is impossible to retouch photos, positions itself as a serious competitor to Instagram.

In the social media landscape, the trend is towards reality. It is in this segment that BeReal was launched in 2020, whose leitmotiv is simple: every day, at a random time, a notification is sent to the user who must then take a photo at the moment it appears, with both photo sensors (front and rear) activated.

A feature that leaves little room for preparation, at a time when photographs on social networks are increasingly retouched, or even completely fake and generated by artificial intelligence. A phenomenon that Romain Salzman, BeReal’s director of operations, returned to in an interview with France Inter on March 28.

He makes the comparison to Instagram, where there are many edits, including accounts maintained by people created from scratch using generative AI.

Unlike BeReal, points out the interested party, which is distinguished from other social networks by only offering exchanges and interactions within their group of friends: “We connect you with your closest friends, it is a very restricted circle.”

In fact, screen time on the BeReal is only about fifteen minutes, depending on the app. Helped by word of mouth, the platform saw its number of users increase by 315% between 2021 and 2022.

However, the year 2023 was quieter for BeReal, which had to announce several important changes to continue growing and attracting investors. Thus he announced the appearance of advertisements and the arrival of brands and influencers to attract more and more people, while promising that the original concept of the application will be maintained.
