To pay at checkout, Amazon scans your palm

The Amazon One application, available in the United States, makes it easy to pay for purchases with a simple wave of your hand.

Contactless bank card payment, is it already a thing of the past? Amazon has just launched Amazon One, an application that allows American consumers to register directly through their smartphone to pay for their purchases with a simple wave of the hand in its stores.

The e-commerce giant’s contactless biometric payment is now available in all Whole Foods stores in the United States and in more than 150 American stadiums, airports and sports centers. In total, the in-store palm recognition service has been used more than 8 million times, according to Amazon.

Facilitates the registration process

But customers had to come to the store to register. Therefore, the application makes the procedures easier. No need to queue. Now a simple smartphone is enough.

Specifically, US customers must download the app from the App Store or Google Play and take a photo of their hand. The AI then analyzes the structure of the palm to “create a unique digital and vector representation.” Once at the checkout, the in-store payment system recognizes this image.

First tests in France

The e-commerce giant notably insists that palm images will not be stored on Amazon One devices, but will be encrypted and sent to secure cloud spaces.

The new application “includes additional layers of security to detect identity theft attempts,” Amazon says.

In France, the French company Ingenico intends to use biometric data to facilitate the payment process in the store. Testing in French supermarkets should begin at the end of 2024.
