DALSI, Streamers Games, GP Explorer… Why Twitch is starting to imitate television

Dance contests, car races, talk shows… The content broadcast on Twitch is increasingly similar to television shows. But the co-production between Michou and TF1 marks a new stage in the rapprochement between the two media.

Tangos, rock and foxtrots on social networks. For three weeks, the cult show TF1 Dance with the stars has invaded the Twitch platform.

The first edition of Dancing with the stars of the Internet (DALSI), a variation of the famous main dance competition, brought together six web celebrities on the floor: Natoo, Gaelle García Díaz, Baghera, Domingo, LeBouseuh and Nico_Tine.

Almost 300,000 viewers gathered on average for the big premiere, with a maximum of up to 400,000 people simultaneously on Michou’s Twitch channel. A record on the content creator’s channel.

And this Friday, March 29, is the final. For the occasion, the show, which will see Natoo and Domingo compete on the track, will be broadcast live on TF1.

A tradition that lasts several years

This is not the first time that the streaming platform adopts television codes. From very early on, content creators took over cult PAF shows with a Twitch twist.

In 2018, streamer Domingo launched Toq Chef, a concept largely inspired by the cooking competition Top Chef on M6. The same year, streamer Jiraiya offered Grand Quiz, a general knowledge show largely inspired by its namesake on TF1.

It’s been a while since the platform launched weekly talk shows. Among the most followed we can mention Zenthe program of the streamer Maxime Biaggi that he presents twice a month on Twitch, or the program Popcorn, created in 2019 by Domingo. Filmed on a set with presenters, columnists, guests and a dozen people behind the scenes, these programs have everything of an American-style talk show.

The most striking example remains the GP Explorer, an F4 car race organized at the Bugatti circuit in Le Mans by Squeezie. All of this, broadcast live as an F1 Grand Prix on Canal+.

A paradoxical approach

With a paradox: young people abandon television broadcasts and rush to their Twitch doubles.

An observation shared by Jonathan Condessa, strategic planner at the OTTA agency and Twitch specialist. “What makes the difference on Twitch is the embodiment. Streamers have that extra, this spontaneity that is not possible on television,” he believes. In his opinion, viewers don’t come to Twitch so much for a particular concept as for a personality.

Another big difference is the interaction via chat, which remains the core of the experience. “On Twitch, everyone can participate. Viewers are an integral part of the show and can shape it,” observes Pontus Eskilsson.

A real turning point

But if content creators have been inspired by television for a long time, DALSI marks a turning point in the relationship between both media. In fact, it is a co-production between the Michou and TF1/BBC teams.

For some time now the cover has focused on social networks, selecting an internet star in each Dancing with the Stars promo. “But with DALSI, TF1 takes full advantage of the Twitch menu. They make available their studios, juries, dancers and even a space in their programming,” recalls Jonathan Condessa. Therefore, an expensive first test. But who can give great benefits?

A win-win operation

For television networks, the objective is twofold: attract young people and rejuvenate their audience. TF1 is not the only one that is betting on these new co-productions. FranceTV announced, not without controversy, the event At Streamer Games, a competition where 32 internet stars will compete in Olympic events. The show will be broadcast on FranceTV and on streamer ZeratoR’s Twitch channel.

Therefore, it is a win-win operation as content creators hope to break the glass ceiling. In fact, for several years, the growth of the main American streaming platform has stagnated.

Therefore, the success of DALSI issuance on TF1 is essential. Good ratings could encourage networks to form new partnerships with streamers.
