France should have an institute dedicated to immersive arts that would be an “experience counter” for the cultural institutions involved, a report recommends on Monday on the development of metaverses, these virtual universes that are supposed to extend the physical world. This is one of the ten recommendations in this report, the result of an exploratory mission launched in February by the Ministries of Economy and Culture, as well as by the Secretary of State for Digital Transition.
The text recommends creating “a research and coordination institute, following the Ircam model”, the Acoustic/Music Research and Coordination Institute created by Pierre Boulez and which combines musical creation and scientific research.
“Defining a True French and European Metaverse Policy”
This institute “would be at the same time a computer research laboratory dedicated to immersive arts, a place of coordination between researchers and artists for the creation of innovative immersive works in metaverses and a counter of knowledge”, indicates the report prepared by Camille François, researcher and director of a cutting-edge augmented reality company, Adrien Basdevant, specialist lawyer and member of the National Digital Council and Rémi Ronfard, research director of Inria (National Institute for Research in Computing and Automation).
This unpublished text, for which more than 80 personalities were consulted, calls for “defining a true French and European metaverse policy” and taking advantage of this opportunity “to regain leadership positions in global digital services, in France and on the European continent “. .
It also recommends now adapting the European texts to the challenges of the metaverses, “developing a rigorous analysis” of their value chains to “limit the risks of loss of sovereignty” or even taking advantage of the 2024 Paris Olympics “to bring together the French actors of the metaverse around specific projects”.
