Since Monday, a team of 16 scientists assembled by NASA has embarked on a nine-month study of UFOs (unidentified flying objects). They will have to study the elements available in the UFOs already observed to try to better understand their nature, to approach them scientifically, explains the US space agency.
“Understanding the data we have about unidentified aerial phenomena is critical to helping us draw scientific conclusions about what’s going on in our skies,” says Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
A UFO is an object or phenomenon “observed in the atmosphere, and the nature of which is not known or recognized by witnesses.” Their appearance is often associated with the idea of an extraterrestrial life form, but “there is no evidence that UFOs are of extraterrestrial origin,” NASA recalled last June.
“Scientifically discern the nature of UFOs”
The selected researchers will study only unclassified UFO data, “collected by civil government entities, commercial data and data from other sources,” explains the US space agency.
The group will then “recommend a roadmap for potential analysis of UFO data in the future (…) The purpose of the study is to inform NASA of possible data that could be collected in the future to scientifically discern the nature of UFOs”.
Furthermore, “unidentified aerial phenomena are of both national security and aviation safety concern” and this study “aligns with one of NASA’s goals of ensuring the safety of aircraft.”
Among the gathered scientists we find a former astronaut (Scott Kelly), a science journalist (Nadia Drake), a professor of physics and astrophysics (Federica Bianco) or an oceanographer.
The report is expected in mid-2023, and the data obtained will be made public, says the space agency.
