Former Russian president puts pressure on Elon Musk after his acquisition of Twitter

The businessman, who has just got his hands on the social network, promises greater freedom of expression on the platform under his leadership.

It is a breath not without irony that he addressed to Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, Dmitry Medvedev, president of the Russian Federation between 2008 and 2012 and now vice president of the Russian Security Council.

A comment that came a few minutes before much more open political support, this time from former US President Donald Trump, banned from the platform since January 2021, but could return there.

If the first part of Dmitry Medvedev’s message could be in keeping with Elon Musk’s promises about expanded freedom of expression on Twitter in the coming months, the Russian leader adds a warning against the ‘businessman’.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Elon Musk has made his Starlink satellite Internet service available to the Ukrainian forces, not without controversy over the financing of the operation. A key tool in the conflict, when many Ukrainian telecommunications infrastructures have been destroyed.

Elon Musk’s position on the conflict in Ukraine is a particularly sensitive issue. At the beginning of October he had been harshly criticized by much of the Ukrainian camp for the dissemination of a Twitter poll that collected the Russian claims. He supported Vladimir Putin, who has since staunchly defended the platform’s new owner.
