Apple is already late. The American company, which until now had planned to implement its new artificial intelligence (AI) features in the initial versions of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 next September, should instead wait for the release of version 18.1 of the operating system technology to equip its devices with generative AI.
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, this postponement should allow the American giant to correct errors and ensure the stability of the new features of “Apple Intelligence”, an artificial intelligence system presented at the World Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
Apple, which is betting heavily on the arrival of generative artificial intelligence on its devices, will allow developers to have early access to Apple Intelligence starting this week, through the beta versions of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1.
Missing functions
As we look forward to the fall — and the likely release of Apple Intelligence — it’s important to note that some features will still be missing from iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1. Some major Siri improvements, such as using device data directly to respond to voice queries, won’t be available right away, Bloomberg reports.
As noted at WWDC, Apple plans to roll out the full suite of Apple Intelligence features in multiple iOS 18 updates between late 2024 and early 2025. These features will also be available on Macs based on Apple chips running macOS Sequoia and are in development for Vision Pro, though no release date has been announced for the latter.
The company is limiting Apple Intelligence support to the iPhone 15 Pro and the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. Apple hopes to boost sales of its new models in this way.
Just over a week ago, the American giant announced that it was postponing the launch of its AI in Europe, citing a legal risk related to the use of personal data. No date for the postponement has been revealed.
