The arrival of Elon Musk at the head of Twitter has many emulators, especially with his recent announcements regarding paid content. Many people have announced that they want to leave the platform.
70,000 internet users even rushed to sign up for Mastodon after the acquisition was announced. But registration on the platform is a bit more laborious than on a classic social network. Here’s how to sign up for Mastodon.
Step 1: Choose your instance
Unlike Twitter, where you reach a vast space populated by millions of Internet users, Mastodon is segmented across multiple servers – instances.
Each of these instances will have its own specific ground rules, as well as its own moderation system. Some instances list a few tens or hundreds of mastonauts, while others may group several hundred thousand users.
Therefore, it is up to you to choose which instance appeals to you the most. In fact, you can choose an instance according to your interests: music, gastronomy, art, games, etc. There are also more general instances, such as mastodon.social, the platform’s historical server, which hosts one hundred thousand mastonauts.
So, once on the app’s home page, all you have to do is click “Create an account”, then choose your server. Next, the group rules defined by the administrators will appear, rules that must be accepted.
Step 2: Create your account
To create your account, you will be asked for certain information, such as your email address and a username. Then you just have to click on “Sign up”. A confirmation email will then be sent to the provided email address to verify that it is not a bot.
Step 3: Create a network
This is where the operation comes closest to Twitter. To build a network, nothing could be simpler: you will need to find the accounts you want to follow through the search bar. However, be careful to fill in the user’s full address, with your correct hostname.
You can also find new people to follow through the “Explore” tab (symbolized by the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen). This tab also brings together interesting posts, trending hashtags, and recently published news articles.
You can now post pouets, toots and other more or less short messages! There remains, however, a fourth step, a bit more laborious: waiting for Internet users to finally decide to join Mastodon. History of not being alone in the Fédiverso.
