Suspended Twitter accounts won’t be restored for several weeks

Elon Musk has confirmed that the platform will launch a process for the return of exiles, including Donald Trump.

Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, assured this Wednesday that the accounts that have been suspended from the social network will not be restored before “a few weeks”, an important decision a few days before the mid-term elections in the United States.

He then recalled his plan to form a content moderation council, made up of “representatives with widely divergent views, likely to include the civil rights community and groups confronting hate violence.”

Elon Musk’s pledge means in particular that former US President Donald Trump will not return to Twitter until next Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Donald Trump was kicked off the platform shortly after the Capitol stormed in January 2021, accused of calling his supporters to violence.

The former Republican president has since claimed he would never return to Twitter after launching his own social network, Truth Social, at the still-secret hearing. Many believe, however, that Donald Trump would have a hard time resisting the urge to return to Twitter, where he had more than 80 million subscribers before he was banned.

Cautious Advertisers

Asked about this permanent suspension, Elon Musk had estimated in May that it was a “morally bad and insane decision in the extreme”.

Since acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk has provoked the ire of several organizations and personalities who are concerned about a relaxation of the moderation policy, leaving the voice to the most extremist speeches.

A group of about 50 associations for the defense of democracy, the fight against disinformation or even the observation of the media, sent an open letter to the 20 largest advertisers on Twitter, warning them that Elon Musk’s promises to a platform that would still be “warm and welcoming”. for all”, “absolutely did not accurately represent his plans for his Twitter”.

Challenging in particular Coca-Cola, Google, but also Disney, the coalition urges these large groups to inform Elon Musk that they will cease all advertising on Twitter on a global scale if he implements his project “with the aim of undermining the security of the brand and community. standards, including the waiver of content moderation.”

In a late-night tweet from Monday to Tuesday, Elon Musk said he spoke with several heads of minority rights groups about “how Twitter will continue to fight hate and harassment, and enforce its policy on ‘election integrity’.” .
